About William Osler and the Health System
The namesake of our health system, William Osler is connected to our hospitals in a number of ways. The great physician was born in the small town of Bond Head, just a short drive north from Etobicoke General Hospital along Hwy #27. A scholar, researcher and writer in a time before antibiotics, Osler’s medical discoveries and insights were as progressive then as modern advances in the preservation of life against myriad conditions such as cancer are today.
Born in 1849, Sir William Osler exacted revolutionary ideals on medicine and hospital care at the turn of the 20th century. Although practices, equipment and science have changed since that time, his devotion to the humanity inherent in treating disease as well as the holistic ideology of considering all body systems upon diagnoses remain current and progressive.
It is this reputation for excellence in medical care, whether in the lab or at the bedside, that William Osler Health System strives to enact and perfect.
Sir William Osler pursued post graduate studies in Vienna, London and Berlin, gaining a greater cultural awareness – a vestige to the keen focus on diversity within the walls today of Brampton Civic Hospital and Etobicoke General Hospital.
On all of William Osler Health System Foundation’s Circle of Champions Donor Walls, William Osler’s quote, “The future is today” can be read. This poignant and relevant quip embodies Osler Foundation’s dedication to further the pursuit of community health care excellence by building relationships in our community and increasing awareness and support for Brampton Civic Hospital, Etobicoke General Hospital and Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness.
