According to the latest available census results, more than 303,000 individuals living in the area served by William Osler Health Centre identified themselves as belonging to a visible minority. Currently, more than 40 per cent of Brampton residents are visible minorities, 64,300 are members of the South Asian community, and 34,000 of them speak Punjabi. Close to 66,000 South Asians live in the Etobicoke Hospital catchment area and more than 27,000 speak Punjabi. William Osler Health Centre Foundation recognizes the
importance of the South Asian community to the Health Centre. The South
Asian community is strong, dynamic and has traditionally been generous
in its support of the Foundation as a way to invest in health care.
In September 2003, Dr. Bajinder Reen, a Nephrologist with the Health Centre, and his wife Mrs. Jiti Reen held a reception for nearly 40 members of the South Asian community to learn about the redevelopment plans for William Osler Health Centre. From those modest roots, a South Asian Roundtable was established to provide the Foundation with guidance and direction. A number of influential individuals have since volunteered their time, knowledge, and expertise and today, total membership sits at 45. From that larger group, there are three committees: Canadian Sikh, Canadian Muslim, and Canadian Hindu. Individuals on these committees are working on strategic plans to fund raise and promote the Foundation’s community campaign. William Osler Health Centre Foundation looks forward to
growing and strengthening the relationship we have with the South Asian
and Canadian Sikh communities.
