On March 6, 2005, William Osler Health Centre (WOHC) announced that the Emergency Department at the new Brampton Civic Hospital would be named the Guru Nanak Emergency Services Department. “The Board of Directors of the hospital recognizes the size, scope and contributions to our society by the Canadian Sikh Community living and working in our hospital’s catchment area,” said Bryan H. Held, former WOHC Board Chair. “This is a fitting and lasting tribute to the Canadian Sikh and South Asian communities.” The idea to name the Brampton Civic Hospital Emergency Department in recognition of the Canadian Sikh Community was put forward in April 2004. A Naming Task Force examined the concept and recommended a number of criteria for use now and in the future for decisions about naming recognition for a specific community group. The Naming Task Force recommended a number of criteria for use for future for decisions about naming recognition for a specific community group. Among them, it was imperative that the recognition is physically identified or accommodated at the new Brampton Civic Hospital and that the recognition be permanent and sustainable. William Osler Health Centre was clear that this naming opportunity was not to be based on any realized financial contributions. Instead, it was in honour of the contributions to our society by the Canadian Sikh Community. In conjunction with this naming opportunity, members of the Canadian Sikh Community have committed to assist William Osler Health Centre Foundation with raising funds to support the new hospital. “The hospital has taken a great step forward to recognize the Sikh Community. The greater community needs to raise 30 per cent of the total cost of the new hospital. It’s our job now to assist with the fundraising endeavours associated with the new Brampton Civic Hospital,” said Foundation Board Member Ramandeep Kaur Grewal.
