Gifts of Stock & Securities

Donating appreciated stocks, securities or mutual funds directly to William Osler Health Centre Foundation is more cost effective than selling the stock and making a cash gift. There are many attractive tax incentives available to you with this program.

*NEW* effective May 2, 2006:
The capital gains inclusion rate is now 0% for donations of publicly listed securities and publicly listed securities acquired through employee stock options. Securities donors will no longer be subject to capital gains tax on donations of securities, and are still entitled to receive a charitable donation tax receipt for the fair market value (FMV) of the securities donated.

As a result, donating securities to a charitable organization may produce a greater tax benefit than selling the shares first, and then donating the cash.

William Osler Health Centre Foundation has produced a website dedicated to gifts of securities. GiveStock.ca was launched in late November to address a call from the community for an easy and direct way to seek information regarding donations of stock or bonds to the Foundation’s Here for you... caring for you Community Campaign.

Demand for information about donations of securities increased in response to favourable changes to federal legislation removing the capital gains tax owed on donations of publicly traded securities to registered charities.

Donations of shares will carry significant tax advantages and substantially reduce the after-tax cost of giving, enabling more donors who are interested in making a gift using publicly-traded securities to become partners in the Here for you... caring for you Community Campaign.
